A shame because I presented Giang Nguyen Hoang
on the main scannography site last month. And he is an exceptionnel
scannographer. Dark, strange, intriguing, theses images are really appealing. I
invite you to visit his page where he mixes radiographies with scannographies.
And I implore you (!!) to scroll down his page till the bottom, you have a
little surprise at the end that will show another side of the possibilities of
this medium and of Giang's skills.

Jan O'Highway seems to be almost a classic scannographer…

…but the way she lays her compositions on the flatbed scanner is rather
original. In a way, she is telling us stories. She uses frames to show images
within the main frame.
Like in comics she plays with the juxtaposition between things to create
emotions. Blur, harsh colors, nice compositions do the rest. Take a look on her
page…

VANITAS, October 28 - Nov 3rd 2012, at Birdwood House Gallery,
Totnes, Devon UK

Timed to coincide with Halloween, All Saints and Sanheim - when the veil
between the worlds is thin- this exhibition takes as a starting point the idea
of Vanitas, a genre that portrays the luscious delights available to us in
life, juxtaposed with symbols, such as skulls, flowers or time-pieces, pointing
to the ephemeral fact of our existence. The work of Totnesian multi-media
artists Verity Newman and Jan O'Highway examines the fleeting nature of life
with work ranging from ceramic sculptures based on the Mexican day of the Dead
to the dreamlike imagery of large-format scanner-photography prints. In the
process the artists cast an eye on the beauty existing in death, and indeed,
the vanity and folly of our precarious existence.

www.janohighway.com www.totnesopenstudios.co.uk/veritynewman

It's been a while since my last post. I'm sorry about this.

Our new artist on the site is an english photographer called Clare West. Her
images can seem very classic but in the same time there is a very special
flavour in them. A kind of nostalgia, something we find in the early
photographies of the 19th century. Textures, colors, mood, everything seems to
be diluted by the time machine !
I'm glad to count her amongst us !

Enjoy and leave some comments please…

That is the project Mitos tries to put together.

Trying to create a book about scannography is what we all want to see
happen.
Here is an opportunity to see this happen: Mitos, in Santa Maria, California,
is tryng to found the energy, money and good wills to create it. So this is an
appeal to everyone interested.
Just go to
this link and read how this works and how you can join in.

I hope Mitos will find the people and the help she needs.

It's a superb object with a perfect layout and wonderful images.

Finally the book has passed frontiers. And it's worth having it in hand. Werner
did a great job trying to explain what scannography is and how to practice it.
Well the book is in german but it's worth having it in hand because it shows on
paper what we all knew: the quality of the images.

The publisher added a few artists (jeff Mihalyo, Patri Feher, Jaime Ruas,
Hercilia Lopes and more) at the end of the book to give a larger view and
opening to the world of Scan-Art. For those interested
you can order the book here. It's really worth the price. And it needs
support.

The last artist of the year is young artist scanning paper pieces to
create some kind of abstract patterns.

You have to discover her works on our page devoted to
her. It's real all about composing, playing with colors, transparency and
light. It's perfectly mastered and a pleasure for the eyes. Her creations are
as close to abstract paintings (like Klee or Mondrian) as to scannography. But
that's what makes our art so interesting : it has no limits except
imagination…

Our new artist from London is a young lady who will surprise
you…
Animating her scanns and playing with her painted portraits, that's what Lil
Ashton is dealing with.

And the results are surprising. Not only are this portraits intriguing but
they also move you as they move themselves. These are like cries from outside
world or inner feelings. In the same time there is a lot of humor and fun in
those images.

After 3 and 1/2 years, I just wanted t sya that, without any adds, any help
from outside, no great contacts, this site's frequentation increases
regularly.

This is thanks to all of you.
With your works with your links with your inspiration you all made this
possible.

I wanted to share a few numbers: • We are more then 60 artists presenting
their works • We have now an average of 100 visits every day on the site • That
makes more then 55000 visits since the start • With on average time spend on
the site between 3-4 minutes (and that's a lot considering some just pass a few
seconds)

A few screen capture from Analytics:

The statistics from last month (in french, I'm sorry)

Nardelli Verlag publishes the first book completely devoted to the technic
of scannography. And to the Art of Werner Abel.

You discovered Werner's work two months ago on scannography.org.
You can now discover it in this book. It's in german but the images are
universal !

Really, this book ist not to flip, but to swing open - like a scanner or
laptop. Read this book and you never will see the nature as before. You will
explore the nature in a completely new way. Enjoy it! While walking with his
dog through the nature, the author, the German artist, Werner Abel, reflected
on itself by collecting all what he found in fauna and flora: flowers,
blossoms, leaves, grains, fruits, vegetables. Arrived at home, he scanned the
found pieces with a customary flatbed-scanner.

The results have been very surprisingly and fascinating. Abel was deeply
impressed. He suddenly could see details which he never have seen before and
which the human eye commonly does not register. Depth of focus, quasi 3-D, from
the middle to the edge. No Digicam can do this…

Reading this book, regarding the wonderful subjects captured by the scanner
you can explore the beauty of the nature in a wondersome matter. Enjoy totally
new insights into the nature, look inside the flowers, leaves and things.
Explore details as close-up which you just have let uncared heretofore. This
book facilitates a new way of looking closely. Hints to arrange your found
pieces on the scanner included. Extra-Service: Scanartists from all over the
world are presenting their most beautiful, impressive and stunning subjects.
What a book – surprisingly, precious, different.

Our september artist is a french painter, photographer, musician AND
scannographer : Jean-Louis
Aubert.

His work is full of spirit, mood and strange ambiances. This artist is a
complete talented one, managing various medias, he mixes his talents as well as
his images.

The scanns he presentes us areof two kinds: raw scanns where he shows some
natural and weird beauties, and, on the other hand, worked out montages he does
from the initial raw scanns. It's strange how some of them don't look as scanns
anymore. Jean-Louis has pushed the possibilities a bit further and this is one
more good thing… You can also see more of his works on his own site.

I had not much time in the last weeks but here we go again… I have to
present you 2 new artists : one for july and one for august. A great summer in
a way.

Werner Abel,
for july, is a german artist who is fascinated by the possibilities of the
flatbed scanner. He is presently publishing the first german book about
scannography at Nardelli publishing.

Luis
Castelo, for august, is a spanish artist who teaches photography at the
Fine Arts University in Madrid. His images are like nothing comparable, between
scientific views and graphic design.

Please leave comments about these two interesting guys…

Werner Abel :

After a chat with Patri, I was just wondering if publishers, somewhere in
this amazing world have had the courage to publish a book about scannography. I
see that sometimes books use scannography for their image content (more and
more when flowers or plants are concerned). I also see that sometimes books
about new technics of capturing images or processing images, have a chapter
that gives a place to our technic. But how many books are now devoted to
scannography.
Being in France, I may miss lots of things that happen in the rest of the
world, so if you can share your knowledge.
By the way, we have a page called "bibliography" on the site and it may need an
update.

So please send me whatever book you know that is a real scannography
book…

Our new artist is someone who must like fairy
tales…

…and nature of course like most of us do, I'm pretty sure. Robert Fleming
works out backgrounds for his scanns and gives them a very special mood. One
can just imagine trolls or elfes appearing in some part of the images. Superb
color arrangements, great depth of fields and wonderfull compositions make of
his images, something classical in a way, yet very unique.
And looking at his images, I can also imagine (easily) that he must like
fishing, but that may be another story…

And you may discover it on his

A strange
site I received infos about.

"This is Serkan Isin, i am the editor of www.poetikhars.com and subsites that are
dedicated to visual poetry scene since 2005. We are following your site with
interest and like you to know about ourexperiments about scanner and visual
poetry, you can visit www.poetikhars.com/camera."

Of course I can't read the pages from this site because I don't read
turkish. Sorry about it but well… I know some amongst you can. But the page
with the images shows some nice black and white researches. Maybe that can give
ideas to some of you. Lots of things and I don't know what part the scanner
exactly takes in them. But I wanted to share.

Make comments if you have infos.

For this month I want to present you Lucy Peltier. She
is playing with very simple yet attractive compositions with marbles and
leaves. I hope you like the quality of her images and the abstract movements
she introduces…

A strange name for a strange artist. Don't miss her, she
shows dark images, a complete different mood in scanner Art. Evilsabeth
Schmitz-Garcia tries to express her sentiments, feelings through with the
scanner and the way this device captures faces, ambiances and colors. Yes it's
dark and uncomfortable but isn't life like this sometimes (I hope not too often
!).

Here is what she says herself about her work : "I tried to represent
Borderline Personality Disorder symptoms with photographies. I decides to use
scannographies instead of photographies because the pictures I took with my
scanner gave me the look I wanted, like "someone trapped inside a dark place",
a dark place wich could be a Borderline's mind."

And if you want to see more of her work she shows great photos on her Flick'r page…
